Big Year comes with a variety of ways to see the whole year in one tab.

  • BIG: The original. All months are laid out from left to right.
  • SCHOOL: Goes from July to June (editable if you wish)
  • TALL: Months go from top to down. January on the left.
  • CHECK: Adds 3 checkboxes to every day. Even Weekends
  • TINY: Small boxes with 3 letters for weekdays
  • MINI: Even smaller than TINY. Only Numbers.
  • FOCUS: Highlights only TODAY!

βš™οΈ Easy to Update

To change the year, you only have to update one cell. In B2 is one single date. It powers all the dates.

What about leap years?
Feb 29th appears automatically in leap years.

But how?
Check out the Leap Year video on YouTube.

🧠 Easy to Focus

I just added a template that helps you focus on one specific day. The most important day of the year. Today. Not some date. Not some holiday. Today. Well, maybe today is a holiday.

Out of all of the days of the year, this tab helps you focus on TODAY.

πŸ›  How BIG YEAR Was Built

You might be surprised to hear Big Year wasn't built in a day. It looks simple. It looks just like: "a bunch of boxes."

Big Year was built by Better Sheets. The variety of templates inside were suggested, or asked for, by Better Sheets members.

Lexi wanted to use Big Year for goals. I added the CHECKBOX version.
Sophie wanted to use the calendar for her school year. I made a SCHOOL version.
Melina actually changed the highlighted weekends. But I knew it could be easier than editing the conditional formatting. I made it SO EASY to change the highlight dates. But not without some roadblocks.

Let me tell you, Google sometimes tells you something is impossible in Google Sheets and there's definitely a way to do it. Oh and ChatGPT even might tell you something can't be done. But it can be done.

πŸ€– ChatGPT Said It wasn't possible. Google too, ugh!
The goal was to make editing the highlighted days in Big Year super easy. At the time you needed to go to the exact Conditional Formatting on the page and change a 1 to 2, or 7 to 6.

The conditional formatting looks at the dates and sees which day of the week it is. Using the WEEKDAY() formula inside of Google Sheets. WEEKDAY() returns 7 for Saturday and 1 for Sunday. And then we compare that to a literal number: 7 or 1.

I said, let's just make that reference a settings tab where a user can update the number, and ::POOF:: automatically updates the highlights. Also great, would be if it updated every version in one go!

But...There was a problem.

So I did the one thing everyone else does.
I asked AI.
And ChatGPT said it wasn't possible either!

Long story short: I figured it out.

Use the INDIRECT() formula.

Now Big Year's highlighted weekends can be any days. You can set it to Fridays and Saturdays. Or Mondays and Wednesdays. Or Mondays and Fridays. Any two days can be your weekend!

πŸ¦„ Big Year Made Marco See More

Marco runs Chaos Chicken, a fried chicken food truck that caters to unique events. Think, festivals and conventions. His unique menu at each event drove lots of Instagram posts and tons of shares. People loved it and he was asked to come to unique events all the time.

He wanted to use Big Year to plot out every event, and give himself the time to prepare a unique menu, each time. Usually he would keep a monthly schedule. Each month perfectly plotted. But he needed a bigger view.

Marco started using Big Year, and had to add an Anime convention to his schedule.

Plotting on Big Year, he discovered this event was right after a string of EDM festivals. Not a week apart, or "next month". But rather he saw them as neighbors on a map of the whole year.

Something in his brain clicked that day. He saw this EDM concert and an Anime Convention next to each other.

He saw a Neon Samurai!
πŸ“ Huge karaage.
πŸ—‘οΈ Satay skewers for swords.
🌈 Bright colorful glow-in-the-dark kimonos.
It could work for both crowds. Prep once. Serve more.

Yes he saved time and money on prep. But more importantly Big Year made him see more.

Big Year didn’t give Marco more time. He still has 365 days like all of us. It showed him the possibilities he'd been ready to pounce on.
